The four stolen museum pieces that were recently recovered have already caused quite a stir in the couple of days since their mysterious return. News reports have mocked the official story which stated that they were “accidentally” found in an unidentified black bag at the subway by an employee of the Ministry of State of Antiquities Affairs (MSAA). Bloggers and Egyptologists have also been scratching their heads over this astounding account of recovering these four items.

British archaeologist Paul Barford took issue at the report’s claim that the shabti was returned “undamaged” when there is clearly a long crack down it’s front. Paul noticed this crack is not apparent in images of the shabti taken prior to it’s theft and seems to has appeared since then.
El arqueólogo británico Paul Barford se opuso a la afirmación del informe sobre que el ushebti fue devuelto en "perfecto estado", cuando es evidente una grieta frontal de arriba abajo. Paul cuenta que esta grieta no se puede apreciar en las imágenes del ushebti tomadas antes de los robos y parece haber aparecido después.

“The second returned object is one of the 10 missing shabtis of Yuya and Tjuya (JE 68984). It is still in very good condition; it does not require restoration and will be placed on display again immediately, stated Dr. Tarek El-Awady, Director of the Egyptian Museum.”

It was clearly apparent that the returned shabti has a crack in it’s front. So I thought I’d take a closer look at the before and after images and compare them. Sure enough, JE 68984 did not have a any such crack on it’s front in the image of the item taken before it was stolen that appeared in the official SCA report of the missing items.
Se aprecia claramente que el ushebti devuelto tiene una grieta frontal. Así que pensé en echar un vistazo más de cerca al antes y el después de las imágenes y compararlas. Efectivamente, JE 68984 no tiene ningún tipo de grieta frontal en la imagen de la pieza tomada antes de que fuera robada, y que apareció en el informe oficial de SCA de los elementos que faltan.
Scrolling down the list though it quickly became obvious that the returned shabti has been wrongly identified in the recent report from the Ministry of Antiquities. The returned shabti is not JE 68984 as stated by El-Tawady. As can be seen by the comparisons below, the returned shabti is in fact JE 68982:

This of course means that shabti JE 68984 has NOT been returned and is still out there somewhere.
